Researchers asked 34 obese people aged 60 to 75 to follow a very low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet for eight weeks. The results showed that people on the low-carb diet lost an average of 10% of body fat, while those on the low-fat diet lost 2%. The low-carb group also saw improvements in their insulin sensitivity, with fasting insulin levels dropped, suggesting they lowered their risk of diabetes and heart disease. In addition, those in the low-carbohydrate group also experienced a significant increase in thigh skeletal muscle.
Amy Goss, lead researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, pointed out that eggs are an important, nutrient-rich food source that is essential for growth, development, and maintenance of muscle quality. A low-carbohydrate diet may be of particular benefit to people 65 and older, who are at higher risk for chronic disease and need to maintain muscle mass.
